Moon Phases
Understand the Moon's cycle, its influence on our emotions, and how to align your actions with each phase to live with greater intention.
The 8 Phases of the Lunar Cycle
The Complete Lunar Cycle
The Moon takes approximately 29.53 days to complete one orbit around the Earth, a period known as the synodic month. During this cycle, sunlight illuminates different portions of the lunar surface visible from our planet, creating the phases we observe in the night sky.
This cycle has been the foundation of humanity's oldest calendars. The Babylonians, Maya, Chinese, and Hebrews organized their months around the Moon. Ocean tides respond directly to the Moon's gravitational pull, and many agricultural cultures planted and harvested according to lunar phases. Even today, artisanal fishing and biodynamic viticulture follow the Moon's rhythms.
From an astrological perspective, the lunar cycle represents a complete journey of manifestation: from the seed of intention at the New Moon to the harvest of results at the Full Moon, followed by a period of integration and rest before the cycle begins again. Consciously observing this natural rhythm can help us synchronize our projects and emotions with a cadence that humanity has recognized for millennia.
Key cycle facts

- Intermediate phases: 4 transitional phases between the primary ones
- Cycles per year: Approximately 12.4 complete cycles
- Blue Moon: When two Full Moons occur in the same calendar month
- Supermoon: A Full Moon that coincides with perigee (closest point to Earth)
The Moon in the Signs
Beyond its phases, the Moon transits through all 12 zodiac signs approximately every 2.5 days, coloring the collective emotional energy with each sign's qualities. Knowing the Moon's sign on any given day allows you to fine-tune your activities and emotional expectations.
The Moon rules our inner world: emotions, instincts, memory, and unconscious patterns. When it transits through a sign, we all feel a subtle shift in how we process our experiences, regardless of our Sun sign. That's why one day you may feel sociable and the next day need solitude, without anything external having changed.

Void-of-Course Moon
The Moon is said to be "void of course" (VOC) when it has made its last major aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition) with another planet and has not yet entered the next zodiac sign. This period can last from a few minutes to over a day.
During a void-of-course Moon, astrological tradition advises against starting important projects, signing contracts, or making far-reaching decisions, as outcomes tend not to materialize as expected. However, it is an excellent time for reflection, meditation, routine tasks, and completing matters already underway.
Think of the void-of-course Moon as a brief cosmic intermission: a space between acts where energy is in transition. It is not a time for fear, but for conscious pause before the Moon enters a new sign and reactivates the energetic flow.
What works during a VOC Moon
- Meditation and rest: The diffuse energy favors introspection and relaxation.
- Routine tasks: Cleaning, organizing, and completing pending tasks that don't require starting something new.
- Free creativity: Writing, drawing, or improvising without expectations of concrete results.
- Canceling the unnecessary: A good time to say "no" to commitments that don't resonate.
Eclipses: The Most Powerful Phases
Eclipses are amplified versions of New and Full Moons that occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align precisely near the lunar nodes. A solar eclipse happens at the New Moon, when the Moon blocks the Sun's light; a lunar eclipse occurs at the Full Moon, when the Earth casts its shadow on the Moon.
In astrology, eclipses function as karmic accelerators. Solar eclipses open portals of new beginnings that can alter the course of our lives for the following six months. Lunar eclipses, on the other hand, bring culminations, revelations, and closures that may feel intense but necessary.
Eclipses travel in pairs across a zodiacal axis for approximately 18 months. Identifying which area of your birth chart an eclipse falls in allows you to anticipate where you'll feel its effects most strongly. The general recommendation during eclipse season is to observe more than act, allowing changes to reveal themselves before reacting.
Types of eclipses
- Total Solar Eclipse: The Moon completely covers the solar disk. Radical and unexpected new beginnings.
- Annular Solar Eclipse: The Moon leaves a visible ring of fire. Renewal with continuity, changes within existing structures.
- Partial Solar Eclipse: Only part of the Sun is hidden. Subtle yet significant adjustments.
- Total Lunar Eclipse: The Earth completely darkens the Moon, which takes on a reddish color. Deep emotional revelations and definitive closures.
- Penumbral Lunar Eclipse: A subtle darkening of the Moon. Gradual realizations that unfold over time.
