Planetary Transits

Planetary transits are the foundation of every daily horoscope. Understanding how the planets move through the zodiac helps you comprehend why each day brings a different energy.

What Are Transits?

In astrology, a transit occurs when a planet in its current position in the sky forms a significant angle with a point in your birth chart. Your birth chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky at the exact moment of your birth; transits are the moving sky compared to that snapshot.

Imagine your birth chart as a stopped clock. Transits are the hands that keep turning. When a transiting planet touches a sensitive point in your chart, it activates that energy: it can bring opportunities, challenges, emotional clarity, or moments of transformation.

That is why your horoscope changes every day. It is not that your sign changes, but that the planets form different angles with your natal Sun, your natal Moon, and the rest of your astrological map. Some transits last hours (like the Moon's), others last years (like Pluto's). Each one has its own rhythm and purpose.

Each planet tells a story

☉︎

Sun

Identity, vitality, purpose
Personal
The Sun represents your essence, your conscious ego, and the vital force that drives you. When it transits through a sign, it illuminates that sign's qualities for everyone. It is the one that marks the seasons and defines the general energy of the month.
Speed: 1 sign per month — completes the zodiac in 1 year
☽︎

Moon

Emotions, instinct, subconscious
Personal
The Moon is the fastest body and governs your emotions moment by moment. Its transit defines the emotional tone of the day: in Aries you feel impulsive, in Cancer more sensitive, in Capricorn more focused. It is the key to understanding subtle daily mood shifts.
Speed: 1 sign every ~2.5 days — completes the zodiac in ~28 days
☿︎

Mercury

Communication, thought, commerce
Personal
Mercury rules how you think, speak, and process information. Its transits affect negotiations, conversations, and short trips. It is famous for its retrogrades (3-4 times a year), when communication and technology seem to malfunction. It is the messenger of the zodiac.
Speed: ~1 sign per month (with retrogrades) — never strays more than 28 degrees from the Sun
♀︎

Venus

Love, beauty, values
Personal
Venus governs what you love, what attracts you, and how you handle money and pleasure. When it transits your sign, your personal magnetism increases. Its transits mark favorable seasons for romance, art, and important purchases.
Speed: ~1 sign per month — goes retrograde approximately every 18 months
♂︎

Mars

Action, energy, conflict
Personal
Mars is your internal engine: the force that drives you to act, compete, and defend what is yours. Its transits determine where you focus your energy and where tensions may arise. When Mars transits a sign, that area of life is activated with urgency and passion.
Speed: ~6 weeks per sign — completes the zodiac in ~2 years
♃︎

Jupiter

Expansion, luck, abundance
Social
Jupiter is the great benefic: wherever it transits, it expands and multiplies. Its passage through your sign (once every 12 years) marks a period of growth, opportunities, and optimism. It is the planet of faith, long journeys, and higher education.
Speed: ~1 year per sign — completes the zodiac in ~12 years
♄︎

Saturn

Structure, discipline, karma
Social
Saturn is the strict teacher of the zodiac. Its transits are not easy, but they are the ones that teach you the most. It demands responsibility, maturity, and real work. The famous Saturn return (~29 years) marks the transition to true adulthood. Where Saturn transits, you either consolidate or lose what lacks solid foundations.
Speed: ~2.5 years per sign — Saturn return every ~29 years
♅︎

Uranus

Revolution, innovation, surprise
Generational
Uranus breaks molds. Its transits bring unexpected changes, liberation from obsolete structures, and awakening to new possibilities. Entire generations share their Uranus placement, marking waves of social and technological change. Where Uranus transits, nothing stays the same.
Speed: ~7 years per sign — completes the zodiac in ~84 years
♆︎

Neptune

Dreams, spirituality, illusion
Generational
Neptune dissolves boundaries between the real and the imaginary. Its transits elevate intuition and creativity, but can also generate confusion or excessive idealization. It is the planet of transcendent art, universal compassion, and deep spiritual seeking.
Speed: ~14 years per sign — completes the zodiac in ~165 years
♇︎

Pluto

Transformation, power, rebirth
Generational
Pluto operates in the depths. Its transits dismantle what no longer serves to rebuild something more authentic. It is slow but relentless: when it touches a point in your chart, transformation is inevitable and permanent. It rules power, symbolic death, and total rebirth.
Speed: ~12 to 31 years per sign (elliptical orbit) — completes the zodiac in ~248 years

The 5 Major Aspects

An aspect is the angle formed between two planets as seen from Earth. These angles activate different types of energy: some flow with ease, others generate tension that drives growth. The five major aspects are the most potent.

Conjunction

0 degrees
Fusion · Intensity · Beginning

Two planets occupy the same degree of the zodiac. Their energies merge and amplify each other. It is the most powerful aspect: it marks new cycles. It can be harmonious or challenging depending on the planets involved.

Sextile

60 degrees
Opportunity · Cooperation · Talent

A 60-degree angle creates opportunities that require a small effort to activate. It is a friendly aspect that connects signs of compatible elements. It gives nothing for free, but opens doors if you decide to walk through them.

Square

90 degrees
Tension · Challenge · Growth

The square generates friction between two energies that do not naturally understand each other. It is uncomfortable, but it is the engine of personal growth. Without squares, there would be no motivation to change. They are the aspects that strengthen us the most.

Trine

120 degrees
Flow · Natural talent · Ease

The trine connects signs of the same element, creating a natural flow of energy. Everything moves effortlessly. It is the aspect of innate talents and good fortune, although its ease can breed complacency if not properly leveraged.

Opposition

180 degrees
Polarity · Awareness · Balance

Two planets face each other from opposite sides of the zodiac. This tension creates awareness: you see both extremes of a dilemma clearly. The lesson is to integrate the opposites, not to choose one. Oppositions often manifest through relationships.

Retrograde Planets

What does retrograde mean?

From Earth's perspective, sometimes a planet appears to move backward across the sky. It does not actually move backward; it is an optical effect caused by differences in orbital speed. Think of when you overtake a car on the highway: for a moment, it seems to go in reverse, even though both are moving forward.

In astrology, retrograde periods invite us to review, rethink, and reconsider the themes that planet governs. They are not "bad" periods; they are necessary pauses to correct course before moving forward with greater clarity.

Most important retrogrades

  • Mercury retrograde — The most famous. It occurs 3 to 4 times a year, lasting about 3 weeks. It affects communication, technology, contracts, and travel. Recommendation: review before sending, back up your files, and avoid signing new contracts if possible.
  • Venus retrograde — Every 18 months, for ~40 days. A time to reevaluate relationships, personal values, and finances. Ex-partners may reappear. Not ideal for starting new relationships or cosmetic procedures.
  • Mars retrograde — Every ~2 years, for ~2.5 months. Energy drops, motivation decreases, and impulsive actions backfire. It is a time for strategy, not attack. Review your battles before fighting them.
  • Jupiter retrograde — ~4 months per year. Growth turns inward. A good time to study, reflect on your beliefs, and plan future expansion without acting yet.
  • Saturn retrograde — ~4.5 months per year. You review your structures, responsibilities, and boundaries. External restrictions may ease, but internal discipline is put to the test.

Remember: a retrograde planet is not your enemy. It is a teacher asking you to pause, look back, and make sure your foundations are solid before continuing to build.
